I have seen so many comments on social and people asking "How do I have the perfect work/life balance?!". This common question has been a theme lately and the sought after answer almost as if it is always out of reach.
When I worked in corporate, I use to believe that there was a work/life balance. That we managed our daily job in order to then hopefully have a life outside of it and do things with our friends and family. I strived to have try and find it, just like you. At my last job though I failed miserably at it, I felt like I was not in control of my life any more because my job was so demanding and intense that I just was not able to have a life outside of it.
It was not until I left and started this business that I was given some great advice on what exactly a work/life balance really is... It's a MYTH, there I said it (don't shoot!). Yes, you read that right, it's a myth that we are trying to find, just like the ever fantastic unicorn. What I learned from this wise life coach was put into question form and I am going to share it with you!
"What if our life includes the work/career we choose instead of trying to balance it?"
This concept was like an epic mic-drop moment for the group that had asked about it. The concept basically is, instead of balancing it, we need to create the schedule that includes everything, not just business stuff. Mind-blown right? So how do we accomplish this? How do we make everything a priority and not just the business stuff so we can "get to life". Here are some tips for you to mull over:
1. Evaluate your business/career - I know this may seem obvious, but we can just get caught up in "This is life, this is what I do." that we can forget that we get to choose. If you really want something different, I would encourage you to come up with a plan to help you get from your "work/life balanced" self to your completely balanced life self. (Need help, click here)
2. Schedule EVERYTHING - I mean everything... don't just schedule your work meetings or what you want to batch for your business, put in when you want to eat, your plans with your girlfriends, or even the date nights that you want. When you schedule everything then you can realistically see what you can add and what you can't. If something important does come up, see if you can move something else too, not just squeeze it in. There is a balance when it comes to realistic expectations in schedules because we only have 24 hours in a day, so when important things do come up, remember that it's ok to be flexible in your schedule too!
3. You get to choose - Yup, you right there, you get to choose what you want to do in your life and how you want to create the life that is right for YOU. If you feel like the "balance" if off, see what is going on in your schedule, see if there is a direction you are taking that isn't completely aligned with what you want. Don't be afraid to pivot if you see something that sparks your passion. You get to choose it all, just remember that being strategic over impulsive can really help keep the sanity!
So, there you have it, the work/life balance has been de-bunked, it does not exist because as of today, we are going to be completely balanced in our lives. This is because we are choosing how we go about our lives which includes constantly evaluating what you are doing, scheduling everything so we have better realistic expectation and remember we get to choose! :)
